Jim Downs, VP of Operations for the Hockomock Area YMCA (MA), tells Even Field Founder Chuck Wilson the story of a young player hearing sideline advice from his dad. Downs goes on to describe the youth sports culture and the message we are sending young athletes when we narrowly focus on the outcome of the games. The conversation also centers on the importance of teaching and reinforcing core values in youth sports and how playing team sports the “right way” provides young people valuable life lessons. Jim talks about the YMCA approach to youth sports and how youth sports coaching and youth sports parenting could help young athletes get the most out of the team sports experience.
This conversation took place at the New England Patriots Alumni Club “Football For You” Clinic held in Foxboro (MA) June 26, 2014.
